Rihanna Gives the Mini Skirt a Playful Twist

Y2K staples like low-rise jeans and mini skirts are back in full force, whether you like it or not. The tricky, skin-bearing silhouettes are resurfacing thanks to labels like Blumarine, Missoni, and Versace—all of whom are channelling that gaudy, early-aughts aesthetic in a chic new way. (Just look at the hemlines from the recent Versace show as a case study).

Rihanna, always ahead of the curve, is more than on board with the look. She stepped out in New York this weekend wearing a mini skirt that was at once whimsical and sexy.

While it showed a lot of leg, her black skirt was trimmed with marabou feathers (or possibly fur), which instantly lessened its va-va-voom nature and made it more kitschy. But don’t mistake that for costumey.

The way she styled it was still downright cool, thanks to her bra top, mounds of gold necklaces, zip-up hoodie, and platform Amina Muaddi heels (one of her favorite shoe labels). The outfit was full of unexpected details. After all, it wouldn’t be a Rihanna look unless she wore an outfit that nobody else could pull off.
