At one point or the other, we all have to shave. Except if you are part of the “keeping it natural” geng or you are the lazy type that doesn’t keep yourself clean. However, if you are big on cleanliness and tidiness you’ll definitely want to shave.

Well, except if you prefer to wax (though, it’s quite expensive) then you won’t be bothered about some skin issues that come with razor-ing. If you fall into the big category of people who’ll rather save up and do things themselves than spend a huge sum on waxing then you need to know some things which will help you prevent bumps.

Many feel uncomfortable because of the bumps and dark spots that remain after shaving as it can tamper with their confidence. Yes, you might want to look neat for “zaddy” but unfortunately, you are stuck with bumps. it should be comforting to know that after-shave reactions can be avoided with just a few tricks.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid bumps after shaving

1. Don’t Use a Razor More Than Once

While it’s understandable that there is “sapa” (Nigerian slang for being extremely broke or poor, usually after spending extravagantly), it’s not proper to use the same razor over again. The skin around our armpits, vagina, chin, legs and several other places are pretty sensitive, thus, reusing the same razor/stick can trigger reactions.

2. Trim The Hair

Cutting off as much hair as possible with scissors or an electric shaver before you start shaving will help in reducing skin irritation as you won’t have to go back and forth in the same section trying to get rid of the hair.

3. Shave in The Right Direction

While we’ve got lots of things to do, we most times don’t want to spend much time shaving and we do it just ‘anyhow.’ But it’s important to note that shaving in the wrong direction can cause bumps. it is advisable to shave in the direction of hair growth.

4. Shave With Shaving Cream

Ever noticed how inflamed your skin becomes when you shave over dry skin? This causes razor burns, itching, and redness. To prevent this, use a shaving cream or moisturizing lotion and apply it generously before shaving away. Otherwise, you can use soapy water to lather the area you want to shave in order to prep the skin.

Prior to shaving or waxing, you can try to lower the risk of razor bumps by preparing the skin. You can do this by following these steps:

  • Avoiding skin care products containing ingredients that may irritate the skin
  • Cleansing and exfoliating the skin in the pubic area
  • Removing the hair after having a bath or shower or placing a warm, wet towel on the pubic area
  • Use an appropriate shaving cream, shaving gel, or waxing product
  • Use a fresh, sharp, and sterile razor
