How do we get Blackheads?

“We all have pores and when those pores become blocked with debris, oil, or dead skin cells, that’s when you get a blackhead. The reason they look black is because all the oils in them become oxidised. It’s not the dirt that is black, it is just oxidised oil.” — Cosmopolitan

Blackheads form when a hair follicle in the skin becomes clogged or plugged. Dead skin cells and excess oil collect in the follicle’s opening, which produces a bump. If the skin over the bump opens, the air exposure causes the plug to look black, thus forming a blackhead.

There are certain factors that can raise the likelihood of getting blackheads, which include:

  1. Overproduction of natural body oil.
  2. Hair follicle irritation when dead skin cells fail to shed regularly.
  3. Hormonal fluctuations lead to increased oil production during adolescence, menstruation, or while taking birth control pills.

How do you remove a blackhead?

Below are 7 ways to remove blackheads. Scroll further

1. Cleanse with salicylic acid

To effectively treat blackheads and whiteheads, opt for OTC products that contain salicylic acid instead of benzoyl peroxide.

Salicylic acid is the preferred ingredient for clearing clogged pores by breaking down excess oil and dead skin cells. Using a daily cleanser with salicylic acid can help remove daily dirt, oil, and makeup in addition to unclogging pores.

If you have dry skin, try using a salicylic acid cleanser once a day to start. You may consider using it at night and your regular cleanser in the morning. Gradually increase the usage as your skin adjusts to the product.

However, be aware that some people may be sensitive to salicylic acid, so it is important to start with a low frequency of usage. If you experience any adverse reactions, discontinue use.

2. Use a Skin Brush

A skin brush can provide similar exfoliating benefits as AHAs and BHAs by removing excess dead skin cells.

Skin brushes should only be used occasionally with a gentle cleansing wash and avoid the use of a brush altogether if you have sensitive skin.

Depending on your needs and budget, there are a variety of skin brushes available to be used with your daily cleanser.

3. Exfoilate

Exfoliating regularly help unclog pores, gets rid of dry skin cells, and clears the skin of dirt, oils, and unwanted substances. The result is healthier, smoother skin you’ll be proud of.

4. Use Clay Mask

According to Britt Kimmins, clay masks are effective in removing oils and toxins from the skin, thereby unclogging pores. This makes them a popular choice for people with oily skin.

In addition to clay, some masks also contain sulfur, which can help to break down dead skin cells that contribute to blackheads.

To reap the benefits of a clay mask, it is recommended to use it once a week in addition to a once- or twice-weekly exfoliating treatment. This routine can help to keep your skin clear and free of blackheads.

5. Use Charcoal Mask

Britt Kimmins notes that charcoal masks, like clay masks, have the ability to deeply penetrate the skin and draw out oil and impurities. Charcoal is believed to enhance these benefits further.

Using a charcoal mask can help to unclog pores, reduce the appearance of blackheads, and leave the skin feeling refreshed and clean. However, it is important to use them in moderation as they can be drying on the skin if overused. It is recommended to use a charcoal mask once a week or as needed to maintain clear and healthy-looking skin.

6. Don’t sleep with your makeup on

After a tiring day, removing your makeup might be the last thing you feel like doing. But going to bed without removing your makeup can result in more blackheads. Even non-comedogenic makeup can clog your pores if left on overnight.

It is noted that people with oily skin should consider using a foaming cleanser to keep excess oil at bay and unclog their pores. Additionally, using makeup removers before washing your face can provide extra cleansing power.

7. Consider Using Chemical Peel

Chemical peels often contain AHAs or BHAs, that are great for exfoliating the skin and also getting rid of blackheads. In addition to this, they are also a trusted anti-ageing method for women looking to reverse the signs of time. The results are smoother skin, reducing enlarged pores, while also treating blackheads in the process.

Conclusion

In conclusion, getting smooth skin requires effort. Blackheads can be a frustrating and persistent skin concern, but there are various ways to remove them effectively. From gentle exfoliation with salicylic acid or alpha-hydroxy acids to using pore strips or manual extraction tools, each method has its benefits and limitations. It’s essential to choose a method that suits your skin type and to avoid being too aggressive with your skin to prevent irritation and damage.

Consistency is key, and incorporating regular cleansing and exfoliation into your skincare routine can help prevent the formation of new blackheads. Ultimately, removing blackheads requires patience, diligence, and a willingness to experiment with different methods until you find what works best for you. With the right approach, you can achieve clearer, smoother skin and say goodbye to pesky blackheads for good.
