Davido Alleges Plot to Cancel His December Concert in Nigeria After Speaking Out on Nigeria’s Economy

Davido alleges to cancel his December concert following criticism from his recent interview where he describes the Nigerian economy as being “in shambles.”

Davido recently shared his concerns about Nigeria’s economic state in an interview on The Beat 96.1. He described the economy as being “in shambles.” The singer advised African Americans considering relocating to Nigeria to reconsider, citing the country’s severe economic crisis, which has worsened under President Bola Tinubu‘s economic reforms.

Davido emphasized the significance of the Nigerian entertainment industry, particularly Afrobeats, as a major export and a key contributor to the country’s global image. The four-time Grammy nominee acknowledged Nigeria’s abundance of talent, but lamented the country’s lack of effective leadership.

Davido’s interview has sparked criticism from some Nigerians, who deem his comments unpatriotic and potentially damaging to the country’s global reputation.

A TVC morning talk show host publicly rebuked Davido for his candid remarks on Nigeria’s economy, particularly given the President’s concurrent efforts to attract foreign investment at the G8 summit in Brazil.

In contrast, many Nigerians praised Davido’s comments as a candid and passionate assessment of the country’s struggles. They noted that Nigeria is home to some of the world’s poorest people, who are being further impoverished by soaring inflation.

Following the backlash, Davido took to social media to claim that there is a plot to cancel his December concert due to his comments. Undeterred, he asserted that he is not obligated to perform in Nigeria.
