Lesson number one, get your lighting right. Dark, dingy corner, will not make for a pretty pictures, unless you have a ringlight handy. If so, avoid standing directly in front of the light source. Tilt your head to the side slightly keeping the source of light between you and the lens, this will ensure even coverage and avoid a washed out look.
But you’re best off sticking to natural light. If you’re at home, stand in front of a window. If you’re outside, bask in the sunlight.
