On April 26, Doja Cat donned a sheer-busted empire-waist gown for the Time 100 Gala that has left me captivated. The gown incorporates sheer in a fresh and contemporary way, dismissing the notion that the creative use of sheer in red-carpet gowns has reached its limit.
The lavender skirt is sheer and decorated with a ladylike bias ruffle, revealing black bikini bottoms underneath. The skirt falls from a sheer black panel at the bust, creating an empire silhouette. The bright red opera gloves add a touch of Jane Austen to the look, while the visible nipple covers and sky-high platform pumps scream Doja. The pop superstar accessorized with a diamond choker and dazzling diamond chandelier earrings, and her makeup featured over-lined lips and a serious smoky eye.
Brett Alan Nelson, Doja Cat’s stylist, shared on Instagram that the singer’s gown is from Maison Valentino, and her jewels are from Messika Jewelry. Nelson also gave shoutouts to Doja’s hair and makeup artists, JStayReady and Ernesto Casillas, respectively.
Doja Cat was one of Time’s 100 honorees that evening, recognized as one of the most influential people of 2023. In his write-up of the singer, rapper, and artist, Baz Luhrmann praised her as a multifaceted artist that he has connected with on a “deeper level.” Luhrmann has worked with Doja on the upcoming film Elvis and expressed that she cannot be pigeonholed into one genre or style, as she is always transforming and experimenting with new characters and ideas. According to Luhrmann, Doja Cat’s unpredictability is what makes her so exciting.
