A powerful moment for African music unfolded in Los Angeles during the 68th Annual Grammy Awards season as Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was posthumously honoured with the prestigious Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The recognition was presented at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony, marking a historic first for the continent and reaffirming Fela’s enduring global influence.
The honour was conferred by the Recording Academy, placing Fela among an exceptional group of music greats such as Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, and Paul Simon. According to the Academy’s leadership, the honourees were selected for shaping the sound, direction, and cultural impact of modern music across generations.

Fela’s family was at the heart of the ceremony, stepping forward to receive the award in his honour. Femi Kuti, alongside Yeni Kuti, Shalewa Kuti, and Kunle Kuti, represented the Kuti legacy on stage, a reminder that Afrobeat remains very much alive within the family.
Speaking during the acceptance, Yeni Kuti reflected on the emotional weight of the moment, expressing gratitude to the Recording Academy and supporters of Fela’s work worldwide. She also acknowledged family members who could not attend, while celebrating the younger generation continuing the Afrobeat movement.
Femi Kuti followed with a message that went beyond music, thanking DJs, journalists, fans, and everyone who has kept Afrobeat alive across decades and continents. He emphasized that the award was not only a personal family honour, but a moment of significance for Africa and for the global ideals of freedom, resistance, and unity that his father stood for.
With this recognition, the Recording Academy has formally acknowledged what fans have known for decades: Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was not just an artist, but a revolutionary force whose music reshaped global sound and consciousness. In 2026, his legacy remains as powerful and relevant as ever.
