Rihanna recently showed followers an entirely new way to rock the colour, posting a video of herself applying bright red liner to her lower waterline. The result? A reverse cat eye only she can pull off.
In the quick clip, posted to her Instagram Stories, the Fenty founder is already wearing a creamy cherry shade along her bottom lashes—into her crease and with a slight wing—leaving the top of her eyelids mostly bare. She then takes an eye pencil (we’re almost certain it’s the Fenty Beauty Flypencil Longwear in Cherry Punk) and emphasises the line, making sure to look away so she doesn’t tear up. Such a pro.
Now, we would never discourage you from trying something out-there with your makeup. It’s your face; do what you want, and have fun! But Rihanna makes even the most intense looks seem effortless, so don’t be discouraged if this takes you a few tries. Red eyeliner is…let’s just say, eccentric.
Tip: Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before you rock this look. If your eyes are bleary or pink, people might think you have some kind of infection. You’ll notice Ri’s eyes here look super well rested, and can I just say: Her eyebrows have never looked more perfect.
If you don’t feel quite up to the challenge of hand-drawing your own swoosh, you might take a cue from Hailey Bieber, who over the summer wore holographic eyeliner stickers for some Euphoria-level glam. Just as eye-catching but with none of the risk (and none of the cleanup).
We’ve also rounded up the best waterproof, smudge-proof eyeliners for all-day wear, because with masks still being worn in many public indoor locations (safety first!), it’s all the more important to give the top half of your face a perfect beat.
