Exactly ten years ago, Nigerian music sensation Adekunle Gold took a step that would transform his life forever. That step was the creation of “Sade,” a song that would go on to define his career and introduce him as one of the most authentic voices in Afro-pop.

The story begins on an ordinary evening. Adekunle was driving home from work in his green “baby boy” car, with the radio providing his soundtrack. As “Story of My Life” by One Direction filled the airwaves, he was captivated.

“I thought it was beautiful,” Adekunle recalls. “I thought it was a good melody and idea. So, I pulled out my phone, recorded the melody, and left it there.” Inspired, he grabbed his phone, recorded a quick rendition of the melody, and tucked it away—unaware of the impact it would later have.

For a while, the melody sat untouched on his phone. But as Adekunle began working on an EP to capture the stories and emotions of his life, the forgotten melody resurfaced. Revisiting it, he realized its potential and poured his heart into creating a Nigerian love anthem.

“Sade” wasn’t just a song; it was a personal piece of Adekunle’s journey. Known for his sincerity, Adekunle’s music often draws from his life or the stories shared with him. Reflecting on his creative process, he shared, “I just make music about myself or about a story that somebody told me. I think it’s the sincerity that works for me.”

The success of “Sade” was also rooted in collaboration and the support of a close-knit community. Producer Olaitan Dada played a crucial role, producing the song for free and securing its first radio play. Together, they crafted a sound that resonated deeply with audiences and set Adekunle Gold on his path to stardom.

Fast forward to today, Adekunle Gold is a household name with a decade of achievements under his belt. From chart-topping singles like “Rodo” and “The Life I Chose” to critically acclaimed albums such as Gold and Tequila Ever After, he has solidified his place in the music industry.

Reflecting on his journey, Adekunle expressed gratitude: “Ten years later, I can finally play my song. Thank you for all the years you have and will keep supporting me.”

The story of “Sade” is more than just a tale of a hit song—it’s a testament to the power of persistence, sincerity, and the magic that happens when talent meets opportunity.
