Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s Former President, Dies at 82

Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former president, has died at the age of 82.

The announcement came on Sunday via his official X (formerly Twitter) account in a message shared by his former special adviser, Garba Shehu.

The statement simply read: “The family has announced the passing of the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon, in a clinic in London.”

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, also held power as a military ruler between 1983 and 1985—placing him among the few leaders in the country’s history to govern under both military and democratic systems.

Reports suggest that the former president had been battling an undisclosed illness for several weeks and was receiving medical care in London before his death.

His rise to democratic leadership began in December 2014 when he clinched the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket. He went on to win the 2015 general election and was sworn in on May 29, 2015. Buhari was re-elected for a second term in 2019.
