Tanzanian singer Nandy has been fined TSh3 million (approximately KSh147,000) by the National Arts Council of Tanzania (BASATA) over an outfit she wore during her performance at the Miss Universe Tanzania 2026 finale.
The singer, whose real name is Faustina Charles Mfinanga, was sanctioned after BASATA determined that her outfit did not meet the standards set out in Tanzania’s regulations governing artistic performances.
The incident happened during the Miss Universe Tanzania 2026 finale at Haddypro Hall in Dar es Salaam.
Nandy Admits the Violation
According to BASATA’s decision dated September 22, 2026, Nandy committed an ethical offence by wearing clothing the council deemed indecent and contrary to viewers’ dignity.
The council said Nandy admitted the offence during the proceedings.
After the decision, she removed the performance video from her social media platforms and paid the TSh3 million fine.
Unlike some of the other artists affected by BASATA’s latest enforcement action, Nandy has been allowed to continue with her artistic activities, although the council said she will do so under its supervision.
The decision also affected the organisers of the pageant.
Millen Privé & Co. Lifestyle Limited, the company behind Miss Universe Tanzania, was fined an additional TSh3 million over the same incident and issued a stern warning to exercise greater care in future events. BASATA said the company was responsible for allowing the performance in question to take place during the finale.
Harmonize Also Fined by BASATA
Nandy’s case was part of a wider enforcement action by BASATA involving several artists and event organisers.
Tanzanian singer Harmonize, whose real name is Rajab Abdul Kahali, was fined TSh5 million over the music video for his song “Kudos.”
BASATA said the video violated regulations concerning content that undermines the dignity of listeners or viewers. The council ordered Harmonize to remove the video from his social media platforms, pay the fine within 14 days, and stop engaging in artistic activities until he complies with the directives.
The video’s director, Kennedy David Sanga, popularly known as Director Kenny, was handed the same TSh5 million fine and similar directives.
Another TSh3 million fine was issued to Avil Contractors Company Ltd, the organiser of Miss Grand Tanzania, after BASATA said the event was held without the required permit.
Altogether, BASATA announced TSh19 million in fines across the five cases.
BASATA Reminds Artists to Follow Regulations
The council said the latest measures are part of its responsibility to ensure artists and other stakeholders in Tanzania’s creative industry comply with the country’s laws, regulations, guidelines and ethical standards.
For Nandy, the matter has effectively been resolved after she acknowledged the violation, removed the performance video, and paid the fine.
She can continue her artistic career, but BASATA has made it clear that her activities will remain under its supervision following the incident.
