Nigerian music star Burna Boy has set a new record as the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners in Spotify history.
The Grammy-winning singer, whose real name is Damini Ogulu, recently reached 46.84 million monthly listeners, surpassing the previous record of 46.58 million held by South African singer Tyla.
Burna Boy has since increased his audience even further and now boasts 47.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify, putting him on track to become the first African artist to reach 50 million monthly listeners on the streaming platform.
The impressive rise has been fueled by the success of “Dai Dai,” his collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira for the FIFA World Cup. The song recently climbed to No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, making Burna Boy the first African artist to top the chart since Wizkid achieved the feat in 2016 with “One Dance,” his collaboration with Drake.
The milestone adds another achievement to Burna Boy’s growing list of global records as he continues to expand the reach of African music on the international stage.
