Nigerian super eagle defender Calvin Bassey just made history in the Premier league and it’s a big one. He’s officially been named Fulham’s Player of the Season for 2024/2025, becoming the first African and the first Nigerian to ever win the award.
Bassey got a whopping 39.6% of the fan votes, leaving his closest rival and fellow Nigerian Alex Iwobi behind with 21.5%.
Bassey only joined Fulham in July 2023, coming from Ajax. But in just one season, he went from being the new guy to one of the most important players on the team.
He played 35 out of 38 Premier League games, helped the team finish 11th in the league (that’s their best finish in years), and was part of a defence that kept 5 clean sheets.
When he got the award, Bassey kept it humble.
He thanked the fans for voting, gave credit to his teammates and coaching staff, and showed a lot of love to the Fulham family.
His words:
“Thank you guys for voting me Player of the Season. I want to thank God… Big up all my team, the coaching staff, and the Manager for trusting me.”
This isn’t just a win for Bassey, it’s a proud moment for Nigeria and African football. To go from playing in the Netherlands to making history in the Premier League, Bassey’s journey is inspiring.
He’s proven that with hard work, confidence, and heart, you can go from new signing to club hero in no times.
