The UK is currently working on creating more rigid visa restrictions for some countries which include Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan in order to cut down on the bastardization of the immigration system. As reported by The Times, citizens from these countries may find it hard to obtain study and work visas. One of the causes of this development is that in the bid to get permanent residency, legal immigrants usually switch to asylum claims.
Concerns were raised by the ministers on the outrageous rise of asylum claims by these nationalities. In 2024, 2,841 Nigerians, 2,862 Sri Lankans, and 10, 542 Pakistanis made asylum claims. However, some experts have still maintained the stance that the reviews policy will have very little effect on the asylum claims.
The proposed restrictions are part of the UK government’s efforts to tighten immigration controls and ensure that the visa system is not exploited. By limiting visa access for countries with high numbers of asylum claims, the government aims to reduce instances where individuals enter the country on legal visas but later transition to asylum applications. While the policy’s supporters argue it will help maintain the integrity of the immigration process, critics warn that it could unfairly target individuals genuinely seeking work or education opportunities.
