The company has unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, alongside the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The launch marks one of Apple’s biggest changes to the iPhone lineup in years, moving beyond its familiar slab-style design while giving its traditional Pro models major upgrades in cameras, performance, battery life, and artificial intelligence.
The three phones are powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and run iOS 27, but they are designed for very different kinds of users. The iPhone Duo is about flexibility and a larger display, while the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max focus on photography, performance, and professional controls.
iPhone Duo Is Apple’s First Foldable iPhone
The iPhone Duo is easily the headline of Apple’s latest iPhone launch.
When opened, the device reveals a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display, the largest display ever offered on an iPhone. Apple says the screen is 50 percent larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, creating more room for watching videos, gaming, reading, and multitasking.
When folded, the device becomes a more compact phone with a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display. Apple says the outer screen provides about 90 percent of the display area of the iPhone 18 Pro. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, allowing content to transition between the two displays without dramatically changing its proportions.
Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On functionality, and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple is also bringing Apple Pencil support to the Duo through USB-C later this year, opening the door to sketching, note-taking, and document annotation directly on the foldable.
A Foldable Built to Feel Like an iPhone
Apple is clearly aware that entering the foldable market means more than simply putting a hinge between two screens.
The iPhone Duo uses a precision hinge built from more than 100 components and a Grade 5 titanium enclosure. Apple has also developed multiple protective layers for the inner folding display, including a scratch-resistant coating, high-strength glass, custom adhesives, and a titanium plate designed to help manage the stresses created by repeated folding.
The inner display features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce reflections and make the crease less noticeable. The phone is also rated IP68 for resistance to dust and water.
That combination is important because durability has always been one of the biggest questions surrounding foldable phones. Apple is essentially betting that its first foldable needs to feel less like an experiment and more like a natural extension of the iPhone.
The Camera Takes Advantage of the Fold
Apple has also designed the iPhone Duo’s camera experience around its folding form.
The phone features a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system with a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main camera supports up to 2x optical-quality zoom, while the high-resolution sensor is designed to preserve detail when users move between different framing options.
The folding display also creates new possibilities for taking photos and videos.
With Duo Preview, people being photographed can see the camera’s live preview on the outer display. Users can also use the rear cameras to take higher-quality selfies while still seeing themselves on the outside screen.
A Center Stage front camera automatically keeps people framed during photos and videos, while Apple’s on-device intelligence can help recognize when subjects are ready for a shot.
For video creators, the Duo can record 4K video at up to 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision.
iPhone 18 Pro Gets a Serious Camera Upgrade
While the iPhone Duo grabs most of the attention, Apple has also made the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max considerably more interesting for photographers.
The biggest change is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, marking the first time Apple has brought physical aperture control to an iPhone.
The camera uses six laser-cut blades that can move between four aperture settings. The system can automatically adjust depending on lighting and depth-of-field requirements, while users can manually control the aperture through the Camera app.
The new Pro Controls also give users manual access to settings such as aperture, shutter speed and white balance. A histogram is available for photographers who want more precise control over exposure.
Apple has also upgraded Photographic Styles with new texture and grain controls, giving users more control over the appearance of their images.
For video creators, the Pro models can apply Cinematic effects after recording to videos shot at up to 60fps, while Time-lapse now supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR. Apple has also upgraded Audio Mix to improve voice quality and isolate music.
Apple Wants to Make Photos Easier to Trust
One of the more interesting additions to the iPhone 18 Pro is not about making photos look better. It is about helping people know whether a photograph is authentic.
Apple has introduced Apple Reference Image, a feature that can create an unalterable reference version of a photograph using signed sensor data from the camera.
The reference image can be viewed alongside the finished photograph in the Photos app, allowing users to compare what the camera originally captured with an edited version.
The feature could become particularly relevant as AI-generated and heavily manipulated images become harder to distinguish from genuine photographs. Apple says the technology could be useful for photographers, photojournalists and everyday users who want greater confidence in the origin of an image.
A20 Pro Brings More Power and AI
All three new iPhone models are powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip.
Built using a 2-nanometer process, the chip features a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU, and Dual 16-core Neural Engines. Apple says the GPU is up to 40 percent faster than the previous-generation A19 Pro, while memory bandwidth has increased by 50 percent. The Neural Engine also delivers twice the AI processing power of its predecessor.
Apple has paired the chip with improved thermal management. The iPhone 18 Pro models feature a redesigned vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the previous generation, helping the phones maintain higher performance during demanding tasks.
The result should be particularly noticeable for gaming, video editing, and other workloads that push the phone for extended periods.
Battery Life Gets a Major Boost
Battery life is another major part of Apple’s latest Pro upgrade.
The iPhone 18 Pro can deliver up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours on eSIM-only models.
The iPhone 18 Pro can also reach 50 percent charge in around 15 minutes through wired charging, while wireless charging can reach 50 percent in around 30 minutes.
Apple says the Pro Max has received its biggest battery-life increase ever on an iPhone. Five minutes of wired charging can provide around seven hours of video playback.
The iPhone Duo uses a different approach, with a dual-battery architecture built into the two halves of the foldable. Apple says it can provide up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display.
iOS 27 Changes How the New iPhones Work
The hardware is only part of Apple’s strategy.
iOS 27 has been designed to take advantage of the different form factors, particularly on the iPhone Duo. Users can run two apps side by side with Split View and even open two windows from the same app.
Apple is also bringing its new Siri AI experience to the lineup.
Siri AI can use personal context from messages, emails, photos, and other apps, understand what is displayed on the screen, and take actions based on that information. Apple says much of its AI processing happens on-device, with Private Cloud Compute used when additional cloud processing is required.
For Apple, this is an important shift. The iPhone is no longer simply being positioned as a powerful smartphone. It is increasingly being presented as an intelligent personal device that can understand what its owner is doing.
How Much Does the iPhone Duo Cost?
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the U.S. and comes with storage options ranging from 256GB to 2TB.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both Pro models are available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available in black, silver, glacier, and the new burgundy finish.
Pre-orders for the Pro models begin September 12, with availability starting September 18. The iPhone Duo will arrive later, with pre-orders beginning October 16 and availability starting October 23.
Apple Is Finally Playing the Foldable Game
For years, Samsung, Huawei, Honor, Oppo and other smartphone manufacturers have experimented with foldable phones while Apple continued refining the traditional iPhone design. That changes with the iPhone Duo.
Apple has entered the category with a device that combines the familiar iPhone experience with a much larger foldable display, while the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max continue to push the conventional smartphone format forward.
The interesting part is that Apple is not asking users to choose between innovation and the familiar iPhone experience. The company is offering both.
For people who want a traditional flagship, there is the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. For those ready for a completely different way of using an iPhone, there is the iPhone Duo.
And perhaps that is the biggest story from Apple’s latest launch. The company is no longer simply making the iPhone faster or adding another camera.
It is beginning to rethink what an iPhone can actually be.
