Singer Adekunle Gold is doing something special for people with sickle cell. To mark World Sickle Cell Day on June 19, he launched a new program called 5 Star Care, which will give free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Lagos.
You might know Adekunle Gold for his music and fashion, but back in 2022, he opened up to his fans in a heartfelt email. He talked about his own struggles living with sickle cell anemia, how painful it has been, and how he’s stayed strong over the years. He shared how he refuses to let the condition stop him from living his best life. That honest message even showed up in his song “5 Star.”
Now, he’s taking real steps to help others like him.
Through his Adekunle Gold Foundation, he announced the 5 Star Care program. In a video, he shared how personal this moment is for him. He said, “Today is World Sickle Cell Day, and I’m proud to share something that means a lot to me.”
The goal of the program is to support people with sickle cell, so they feel noticed, helped, and truly cared for. And this is just the beginning.

In case you didn’t know, sickle cell disease is a condition passed down from parents that affects the red blood cells. Instead of being round, the cells are shaped like a crescent or sickle, which can block blood flow and cause a lot of pain and tiredness.
