1. Nigerian Leaders Urge Hope and Resilience This Christmas

As Nigerians celebrate Christmas, President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, governors, and other prominent figures assured citizens on Tuesday that the country is on a promising path to restoration and progress, with signs pointing to a brighter future.

2. Ex-Ooni’s Wife and Others Remanded Over Ibadan Stampede Tragedy

Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi of Court 1, Iyaganku, Ibadan, has ordered the remand of Olori Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, and Principal Fasasi Abdulahi Babatunde at Agodi Correctional Facility following a stampede that claimed 40 minors’ lives.

As noted by The Nation, the remand will last pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Oyo State Ministry of Justice.

The ruling, issued on Tuesday, followed their arrest in connection with the recent stampede at Bashorun Islamic High School.

All three individuals were arraigned at Chief Magistrate Court 1, Iyaganku, Ibadan, under a heavy security presence.

3. PSC Approves Appointment of Six New Police Commissioners

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the appointment and posting of six new Commissioners of Police, following last week’s promotions in the Nigeria Police Force.

4. Edo Council Chairmen Defy Thugs, Resume Official Duties

Despite disruptions by suspected thugs, some Edo local government chairmen resumed work on Tuesday in compliance with an Edo State High Court order, amid reports of high-level political interference aiming to remove them.

5. Police Arrest 30,313 Criminals, Rescue 1,581 Kidnap Victims in 2024

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun revealed on Tuesday that the Nigeria Police Force arrested over 30,000 suspects and recovered nearly 2,000 firearms and over 23,000 rounds of ammunition this year.

6. Naira Falls to N1,650 on Parallel Market Amid Official Gains

The Naira depreciated to N1,650 per dollar on the parallel market on Tuesday, down from N1,648 on Monday, while appreciating to N1,537 per dollar in the official exchange market.

7. Imo Police Dismantle Kidnapping Syndicate, Arrest Two Suspects

The Imo State Police Command neutralized three members of a notorious kidnapping and armed robbery syndicate in Orogwe, Owerri West, and arrested two suspects during a raid.

The Command’s Spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, who confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday, said three suspects were neutralised, and two others, David Ifeanyichukwu, 20, and Abuchi Joseph, 24, were arrested.

8. PDP Accuses Tinubu of Disconnect From Nigerians in Media Chat

The Peoples Democratic Party criticized President Bola Tinubu’s Monday media chat, alleging that it underscored the APC-led government’s insensitivity to the hardships Nigerians face. PDP in a statement on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, said the president’s comments meant that he and his party were disconnected from Nigerians and the challenges facing them.

9. Disciplinary Panel Rejects Petition to Disbar Dele Farotimi

The Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee has dismissed a petition to disbar human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi, stating it lacked jurisdiction to handle the defamation case brought by a lawyer from Afe Babalola’s firm.

10. 10-Year-Old Jos Boy Brutally Killed Despite Ransom Payment

A 10-year-old boy, Tasi’u Abdullahi, was murdered by his kidnappers in Jos North, Plateau State, despite his family paying a partial ransom of N150,000. His body was found in a sack near his home.
