Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, died at age 84.
The legendary actor died on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in a statement shared on Instagram.
The family described Olu Jacobs as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, while paying tribute to him as “The Lion of Lufodo.”
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” the family stated.
The statement identified the actor as Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs (MFR) and listed his dates of birth and death as July 11, 1942 – September 16, 2026.
The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy during this difficult period.
A Career That Spanned Generations
Olu Jacobs leaves behind a remarkable acting career that stretched across British television, international cinema, Nigerian theatre and Nollywood.
Before becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognisable actors, Jacobs trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. He began his professional career in Britain, appearing in several television productions, including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, Barlow at Large, The Venturers, Angels, The Tomorrow People and The Professionals.
He would later become a defining figure in Nigerian theatre and film, earning widespread admiration for his commanding screen presence, distinctive voice and ability to bring complex characters to life.
Over the years, Jacobs became one of the most respected names in Nollywood, appearing in numerous Nigerian films and working alongside generations of actors and filmmakers.
His contribution to Nigerian entertainment extended beyond acting. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was also associated with Lufodo Productions, a company involved in theatre, film and television.
Joke Silva Celebrated His 84th Birthday
Jacobs’ death comes just two months after his wife, Joke Silva, publicly celebrated his 84th birthday on July 11. Marking the occasion, Silva affectionately referred to her husband as “THE LION OF LUFODO.”
She later expressed gratitude to Nigerians who sent messages, prayers, and goodwill to the veteran actor. The couple had remained one of the most respected partnerships in Nigeria’s entertainment industry, with both building celebrated careers in acting and theatre.
His Death Follows Years of False Reports
The news of Olu Jacobs’ death also comes after years of false reports claiming that the actor had passed away.
In June 2024, both the Actors Guild of Nigeria and Jacobs’ family dismissed reports that he had died. In response, his son shared a video of the veteran actor.
This time, however, his family has officially confirmed his passing. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

For decades, Olu Jacobs represented a generation of Nigerian actors whose work helped shape the country’s theatre and film industries.
